Puppy & Kitten Health Checks Explained

Puppy & Kitten Health Checks Explained

Bringing home a new puppy or kitten is an exciting time. There is so much to look forward to, from first cuddles and playtimes to helping them settle into family life. Alongside all of that excitement, one of the most important early steps is arranging a veterinary health check.

At Barton Veterinary Practice, we believe early vet visits help give young pets the best possible start. A puppy or kitten check is not just about vaccinations. It is a chance to make sure your new pet is developing well, spot any early concerns, answer your questions, and help you feel confident about their care.

If you have recently welcomed a new pet into your home in Barton, Barrow, Goxhill, New Holland, Wootton or the wider North Lincolnshire area, our puppy and kitten health checks are designed to support you from the very beginning.

Why early health checks matter

Puppies and kittens grow and change very quickly in their first few months. Small issues can sometimes be easy to miss at home, especially if you are a first-time pet owner. An early check allows us to examine your pet from nose to tail and pick up on anything that may need monitoring or treatment.

These visits are also an important part of preventative care. By seeing your puppy or kitten early, we can advise on vaccinations, parasite control, feeding, behaviour, weight, dental development, and neutering, all tailored to your pet’s breed, age and lifestyle.

You can find out more about our wider approach to preventative healthcare and how regular veterinary support helps keep pets healthy as they grow.

What happens during a puppy or kitten health check?

A puppy or kitten health check is a gentle, thorough assessment carried out by one of our veterinary team. We aim to make the experience calm, positive and reassuring for both you and your pet.

Physical examination

We will usually carry out a full head-to-tail examination, which may include checking:

  • Eyes, ears and nose
  • Mouth and teeth
  • Skin and coat condition
  • Heart and lungs
  • Tummy and general body condition
  • Limbs, joints and movement
  • Weight and growth
  • In male pets, whether both testicles have descended where appropriate for age

This helps us identify any obvious signs of illness, discomfort, developmental concerns or congenital problems, which means conditions present from birth.

Advice on vaccinations

Vaccinations are a key part of protecting puppies and kittens from some serious infectious diseases. During the appointment, we will discuss which vaccines your pet needs, when they should be given, and when your puppy or kitten can begin safely exploring the outside world.

If you are unsure about timings, our team can guide you through the process and help you book follow-up visits through our online booking page.

Flea, worm and parasite prevention

Young pets are especially vulnerable to parasites such as fleas and worms. Even pets that seem perfectly healthy can carry them. We will talk you through suitable treatment options based on your pet’s age, size and lifestyle, so you know how to keep them protected.

Feeding and growth guidance

Nutrition plays a big role in healthy development. During the check, we can advise on feeding amounts, suitable diets, expected growth, and how to avoid overfeeding or underfeeding. This is especially helpful as breed, size and activity level can all influence what is best for your pet.

Behaviour and settling in

The early weeks are also an important time for learning and social development. We are happy to advise on toilet training, puppy mouthing, sleep routines, kitten play behaviour, scratching, handling and introducing your new pet to children or other animals in the home.

Early support can make day-to-day life much easier and help prevent small issues becoming long-term habits.

When should you book your first visit?

We recommend arranging a health check soon after bringing your puppy or kitten home. Even if your breeder or rescue has already had them seen by a vet, it is still helpful for your own practice to carry out an initial examination and set up a care plan.

Booking early means we can:

  • Check your pet’s general health
  • Review any paperwork or vaccination history
  • Discuss next steps for vaccinations and parasite treatment
  • Answer questions about settling in, feeding and behaviour
  • Help register your pet for ongoing care

If you are new to us, you can register your pet quickly and easily online.

Common things owners ask about at early checks

It is completely normal to have lots of questions with a new puppy or kitten. Some of the most common topics we discuss include:

  • When can my puppy go for walks?
  • How much should my kitten be eating?
  • Is this scratching, biting or chewing normal?
  • How often should I worm my pet?
  • When should my pet be neutered?
  • What should I do if they have diarrhoea or are sick?
  • How can I help them get used to handling, grooming or travelling?

No question is too small. Early appointments are a great opportunity to build confidence and make sure you have the right information from a trusted veterinary team.

Signs your puppy or kitten may need vet attention sooner

While many young pets settle in very well, there are times when prompt veterinary advice is important. Please contact a vet if your puppy or kitten shows signs such as:

  • Not eating or drinking
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea, especially if repeated
  • Lethargy or unusual sleepiness
  • Coughing, sneezing or breathing changes
  • Discharge from the eyes or nose
  • Swollen tummy or signs of pain
  • Itching, hair loss or irritated skin
  • Limping or difficulty moving

Young animals can become poorly more quickly than adult pets, so it is always best to seek advice if you are concerned.

This article is intended for general guidance only. If your pet is unwell or showing concerning symptoms, please contact your vet for professional advice.

Supporting your pet beyond the first check

Your puppy or kitten’s first appointment is only the beginning. Ongoing routine care helps monitor growth, keep vaccinations and parasite prevention up to date, and support your pet through each life stage.

At Barton Veterinary Practice, we offer a range of health checks and clinics to help pets stay well. We also provide healthcare plans to support preventive care and spread costs more easily for owners.

Depending on your pet, you may wish to explore our:
